Worcester Art Museum Voucher for Teen Class (Online or In-Person)
Organization or School Affiliation: Medfield High School

Student Name: Paulina Derevyanko
Grade: Grade 10
Artist Statement: Working from a still life I used a white pencil to create a reverse method drawing. I detailed the highlights first, then mid-tones, & then allowed the black paper to act as the shadows.
Weeds
Weeds
Julie Hom-Mandell
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Weston high school

Student Name: Jackie Liu
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This piece is a statement about beauty standards. No botanical difference exists between “flowers” and “weeds.” The distinction is arbitrary — an unnamed, unquantifiable, but almost universally accepted metric of value. One is what society wants, the other is what it doesn’t. But I think weeds are beautiful – who’s to say a rose is prettier than a dandelion?
Breaking boards through Taekwondo
Breaking boards through Taekwondo
Julie Hom-Mandell
Hat Sister Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Weston high school

Student Name: Andrea In
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This acrylic painting was painted on wooden Taekwondo breaking boards. While growing up I was insecure about my skin as I struggled with acne. However, through Taekwondo I was able to train myself to be more confident and break through my insecurities. When breaking the boards I physically used Taekwondo moves to break the wooden boards. I used a red tone in the face to accentuate the acne.

Organization or School Affiliation: Somerville High School, Somerville, MA

Student Name: Athena Parkman
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: Based on the play Still Life With Iris, directed by Charles Jabour. I designed and created the costumes for the Great Goods. The Great Goods want the best of everything and all of their treasures come from a land where everything gets disposed of. I created these unconventional costumes made with coffee filters to show how they're in a class of their own and have elements from the lower class.
Skeleton
Skeleton

MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham Public Schools

Student Name: Ziyuan Zhang
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I mainly use pencils and colored pencils to paint it. The subject of this painting is a skeleton, but I incorporate some of my own ideas. I think that the skeleton does not completely mean death, it's like a kind of rebirth, so I added roses and butterflies and filled them with bright colors to express a kind of vitality. I like this artwork because it expresses my thinking about death and life.

Art for All Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham Public Schools

Student Name: Delanie Pon
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I digitally drew the inside of the Waltham Kung Fu Tea using the flat and Nikko rull brush on Procreate. I enjoyed that there was a glimmer of hope in this entire COVID-19 situation. I wanted to express it by drawing a building that’s not my home. I didn’t enjoy quarantine so drawing this was really freeing. My favorite parts are probably the reflections on the counter and machinery.
Old Time

MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham Public Schools

Student Name: Maiia Bautina
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This observation drawing shows old dishes and things used in a kitchen in old Russia. I wanted to represent Russia in old and modern times, by expressing different aspects of my country. My goal was to make a compositionally successful artwork, show textures with different types of hatching and push values to make it more realistic and outstanding. I did my best and I’m very proud.
Cousin
Cousin
Kathleen Flynn
Art for All Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Waltham Public Schools

Student Name: Eileen Barrera
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: To give my family a surprise portrait of my little cousin, I used Prismacolors to make a semi-realistic portrait to convey a childish feeling. I realized it didn't look like him when I finished- it actually resembled my other cousin, whom I’ve never met. I’m glad I made this for my aunt who has no physical connection with her son in Guatemala. I'm happy this has given my family a closer bond
Paper Coil Vessel
Paper Coil Vessel
Elizabeth Mullaney
Davis Publications Media Category Award:Sculpture
Organization or School Affiliation: Norwood Public Schools, Norwood High School

Student Name: Shayla Wynne
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: For my paper bowl, I used a combination of magazine and newspaper that I attached using glue and tape. My idea for this piece was to have a newspaper coil base with random colorful pointed magazine coils throughout the bowl. The idea was to have smaller coils at the base and increase the size moving upward. Instead of the whole base being smooth, some coils to point for a more interesting look.
The Tempest
The Tempest
Heather Falardeau
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Lowell Catholic

Student Name: Ciara McCarthy
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: Creating gives me an outlet to express my love for beauty in simplicity and the universality of emotion. The goal of my art has always been to give people either a place to retreat from reality or a pedestal to view it face to face, because life is stunning, hideous, and raw, and I seek to hold a mirror to it.
Self Identities
Self Identities
Valerie Sophos
Davis Publications Media Category Award:Mixed Media
Organization or School Affiliation: Marlborough High School

Student Name: Aiden Grocki
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: I wanted to incorporate my struggle with trying to find myself. I feel like there so many parts of me: the black and white side, the optimism I set my sights on, the hope I find when with cats, all surrounded by the struggle of finding how my sexuality is included in my identity. In this mixed media piece, I worked in order to convey my difficulty of finding the right me within a pandemic.

Christine Neville
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Fairhaven High School

Student Name: Emma Paiva
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: This photograph was inspired by the connection between the model and the location, focusing on lines and color. The narrative changed the shoot’s direction. The model, leaning forward at an unrest created a tense mood. Now in times of unrest and chaos if we suddenly found ourselves in a perfect world, we would still have times of normal everyday stress. This keeps us on the edge of our chairs.
Self-Portrait II
Self-Portrait II
Veronique Latimer
Virginia M. Diani Adams Memorial Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Wayland High School

Student Name: Bec Patsenker
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: The most direct way I can express my internal landscape is through self-portraits. When I make a choice in a self-portrait, it instantly becomes me. The fraying of canvas thread, stiffness of wood, weakness of yarn, and decaying of cardboard becomes my own fraying, coldness, weakness, and decay. There is no barrier between my work and myself.

Davis Publications Media Category Award:Drawing
Organization or School Affiliation: Wayland High School

Student Name: Sophie Simmons
Grade: Grade 11
Artist Statement: This piece is a paper cut based on a photo I took of my two cats. As I scrolled through my camera roll, I just found this picture of my cats cuddling together in a cat basket and I knew it was the perfect basis for a piece. I had a lot of fun making it and I'm glad I followed through with the idea when it came along since my cats have brought me a lot of comfort during these times.

Corine Adams
Davis Publications Media Category Award:Ceramics
Organization or School Affiliation: Falmouth High School

Student Name: Malia Jablecki
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I chose to base my piece on a cardinal for a number of reasons, but the main one being it was both of my great grandmothers' favorite bird, and now my mom's. They both loved cardinals, now whenever my mom sees one outside she lights up. We like to think that they mean our Mimis are watching over us.
Birds of Paradise and Wishes

Organization or School Affiliation: Rockport High School

Student Name: Catherine Cheseldine-Ackerman
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I created this piece because I wanted to do something to help and support the BLM movement as well as spread a positive message for everyone to enjoy and be able to take from. I decided to use the symbolism of the bird of paradise flowers which are native to Southern Africa and represents freedom and joy.
Delivery Truck
Delivery Truck
Kristyn Shea
Davis Publications Media Category Award:Painting
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Aeden Marcus
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: “Delivery Truck” was a study in painting an ordinary, even mundane, scene to capture the beauty in everyday life. I strove to paint subtle, realistic variations of light, shadow, and reflection without overdramatizing them. I wanted to communicate that subtle beauty can be found in the most random of scenes, even with a limited color scheme and without enhancing any particular aspect for emphasis.
Cupcake Bandit
Cupcake Bandit
Kristyn Shea
Davis Publications Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Samantha Keefe
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: I created an expressive portrait that portrays emotions of fear and guilt. Using charcoal, I captured intense contrast and depth. I also paid attention to the light source, which comes from multiple directions as this takes place inside of a refrigerator and kitchen. I drew this piece because of my sweet tooth, and the temptation of the cupcake was just too much to resist!

Worcester Art Museum Voucher for Teen Class (Online or In-Person)
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Emily Dionne
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: There are many small details within human interaction that convey meaning and display emotions. People show their gratitude in a variety of ways. My mother has always given me flowers at each of life’s milestones, but I rarely return the favor. As I gave her an intricate bouquet of flowers, I captured her look of surprise and gratitude in fine lines and the contortion of her face using charcoal.
Eve and The Apple
Eve and The Apple
Kristyn Shea
MAEA Art Educator Award
Organization or School Affiliation: Oliver Ames High School

Student Name: Emma Lawson
Grade: Grade 12
Artist Statement: My piece, Eve and The Apple, emulates the techniques of the Baroque Era and artist Artemisia Gentileschi, like dramatic lighting and Biblical subjects. It offers a modern interpretation of the story of Adam and Eve, with the literal apple being replaced with an Apple iPhone. Done in oil paints, this self-portrait is a light-hearted critique of technology use, both in myself and in society.
